It is not meant to take attention away from being focused on God, it is meant to help you to get deeper into the Presence of the Lord where His Spirit Speaks, Reveals and Transforms.
The ultimate purpose of using your guitar when you worship will always be to go in deeper into the Presence of the Lord.
Play and sing the songs by heart (not from the book) and you will develop your ear as to when to change chords. This will work out in time.
